From the 1896 August 28 issue of the
Malone Gazette
On Wednesday night of last week
the Windsor House, a large hotel at Tupper Lake, was destroyed by fire,
together with most of the furniture and fixtures. The residence of Oliver
Martino, adjoining the hotel, was also burned. The hotel had recently been
purchased by F. H. LaDuke, of Potsdam, and was doing a prosperous
business. The proprietor was absent from town at the time of the fire and
returned next day only to find his hotel in ruins. A little girl named
Mabel Baker, seven years of age, a niece of Mrs. LaDuke, perished in the
flames, after having been once rescued. Her remains were discovered in the
ruins of the basement, and it is thought that the little one, being half
dazed by the fire, wandered into the cellar, after having once been taken
to a place of safety, and was unnoticed in the excitement and tumult.
There was insurance amounting to $1,700 on the hotel property, which will
not entirely cover the loss. The origin of the fire is unknown. |
